Former West Virginia State Penitentiary

Moundsville, West Virginia

I again visited the old prison at Moundsville. It's a fascinating place and one that I'd pay for an extra tour if they would only leave me alone for a few hours to just take photos and look around at a leisurely pace. The prison site operated from 1876 to 1995 and since then has been maintained for tours and occasional training purposes. The old section of the building was built in the castellated Gothic style with stone structure complete with turrets and battlements.

I last visited here in 2005, click here for an exterior shot from that visit. Some might remember that Mark Pennington was contacted by a book author who saw his photo on Flickr and later published one of his photographs in a comical book entitled 50 Dates Worse than Yours.
