![]() Pompilios Restaurant Newport, Kentucky I'm always on the lookout for those small locally-known restaurants and I found one in Newport. I think I first heard about Pompilios when I used Dave Lavender's book to guide me on a photo trip to Ohio and West Virginia a few weeks ago. I didn't have the book with me this trip so I sort of did a man-on-the-street survey to find the place. The first fellow was dressed in a suit and confirmed that, yes, it was a good place to eat. To get there, I needed to go over into town and he used an arching arm to point out the location, sort of like showing the trajectory that you would need if you could shoot yourself out of a canon toward it. So, off in the car we went and then we ducked into a parking spot just about where we would have landed with his directions. The fellow walking down the sidewalk also said that, yes, it was a local favorite and as he took us on a stroll toward the restaurant, he included a description of his most favorite meal that they served. A few blocks away, there it was: on the corner, low key, and definitely not a chain. Pompilios has been in Newport for a long long time, in fact they are celebrating their 75th Anniversary in September. I liked the place quite a lot. It had that good comfortable feel to it and the food was excellent. I had the Classic Italian Sampler and it didn't take long to figure out that the lasagna was my favorite. Desert was gelato and you can't get any better than that. Comparing it to the local favorite of my area, the chain The Olive Garden, I would say that Pompilios needs to do a lot of serious work on their salad and bread but the main course just might be a bit more authentic. I'd definitely order the lasagna and gelato again, but your taste may vary. If you watched the movie Rain Man with Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise, then you might remember the toothpick scene that was filmed at this restaurant. Here's their website. Comment (3) | Permalink |
