Self portrait, breakfast at Cedar Point

Cedar Point, near Sandusky, Ohio

Before this website was thought of, I once considered doing a restaurant review-slash-photo website. Sort of like Rachel Ray on the cheap, maybe $20 bucks a day. One of the ongoing irritations of going out to dinner with me is when I whip out the camera for a picture. I use that 'We're from out of town, can you take our picture...' even when we're in town. Works every time. Lately, I've gone into self-portraits, which is a bit trickier. The shots make their way into the family photo albums and help remember good evenings out with family or friends.

This picture, however, seemed to have a bit of magical light to it, so I'll present it here. As you can see, nobody seems to be waiting on my breakfast to arrive.

This picture was shot at the Breakwater Cafe in the northern Ohio amusement park Cedar Point. I can give you a tip on breakfast there, get the pancakes. You get 3 big pancakes fixed up Kentucky style, not those small silver dollar things that you find in some places. On top of that, you get a cup of fresh fruit. They charged me $3.95- quite a bargain.

On my trips, I always try to find the local places to eat. This trip landed some real winners so here's a couple of them:

1. Sumburger at Chillicothe, Ohio. This place has been around a long time, about 50 years. From their webpage, I see they share one thing in common with Jim's Steak and Spaghetti in Huntington, West Virginia. They have some staff that's worked there for a long, long time. I got the double Sumburger, which is like a Big Mac with sauce thats 'a little bit tangier', says the waitress. It's pretty unique in that you are seated in a booth and order via a telephone. Sounds like the order goes straight to the kitchen. Hollyeats.com gives it 4 grease stains out of 5 and I'd agree, but still not quite as good as that greasy burger from the bait shop in West Virginia. More at Sumburger review

2. Back 40 Junction Restaurant in Decatur, Indiana. When I stopped at this restaurant, I didn't even know what town we were in. Before coming to the outskirts of town, I noticed these Burma-shave style signs beside the road. I knew that I just had to stop. What I found was a really nice locally owned version of Cracker Barrel without the giftshop, but with a buffet. Now, I'm not easily turned on by a buffet, but this one was top notch and out of the ordinary. The hand carved roast beef was the best I've ever had. One of the very best salad bars (not huge, just well stocked and taken care of) complete even with a cheese bar, something that's about disappeared from my part of the country. Soup, appetizers, bread, desert- all for about $7 or 8 bucks. Amazing.

Rachel Ray, eat your heart out.
